SplitPlate coalescer

The SplitPlate coalescer consists of a set of parallel plates and is designed to separate two-phase liquid-liquid systems. Separation is improved by reducing the distance required for droplets to settle.

The SplitPlate W coalescer combines inclined parallel plates with fixed spacing, significantly reducing droplet settling distance and improving coalescence. This separator is designed for applications requiring improved performance of gravity settlers. The inclined-plate arrangement allows the liquid phases to separate diagonally towards the liquid-liquid interface. Flow between the plates is generally maintained in the laminar regime to improve separation efficiency. The plate angle and spacing are selected according to the application, the nature of the contaminants present in the mixture and the required degree of separation.

The angle is typically 45° or 60°, with plate spacing from 15 to 100 mm. Thanks to its high fouling resistance, SplitPlate W is used, for example, in separators for crude-oil production. It is also ideal for upgrading an existing gravity separator to increase capacity and separation efficiency.
In terms of design, SplitPlate W can be supplied as a modular frame or box for convenient installation through a manway.

The SplitPlate M coalescer is made of corrugated metal sheets and is similar in design and installation method to SplitPak structured packing.

About

The SplitPlate coalescer is an efficient plate-type coalescing device for efficient separation of two-phase liquid-liquid systems in industrial separators.

Operating principle

The coalescer operates on the principle of coalescence. The emulsion stream is directed through a pack of parallel plates. Small droplets of the dispersed phase strike the plate surfaces, merge into larger droplets and separate from the main flow more rapidly under gravity. The inclined arrangement of the components accelerates drainage of the separated liquid and minimises re-entrainment.

This technology substantially reduces phase-separation time compared with conventional gravity settlers.

Advantages and applications

The SplitPlate coalescer is highly resistant to fouling and operates reliably even with viscous and contaminated streams. The device is particularly effective in crude-oil treatment processes, in distillation-column reflux drums, in streams at risk of solid-particle contamination, and in three-phase separators.

Advantages:

  • Increased separation efficiency.

  • Compact design with high capacity.

  • Reduced risk of droplet re-entrainment.

  • Can be integrated into existing separators.
